There are many species of spiders in Texas, most of which are overwhelmingly beneficial because they eat harmful insects like mosquitoes. In fact, more and more of our customers are instructing us to leave the spiders outside their houses alone, especially on those sides of the houses that aren't visible from the road.
Some spiders, however, can deliver bites that can cause localized pain, itching, and swelling (especially in sensitive individuals); and the bites of two species, the black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans, shown at the right) and the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa, often called the "fiddleback spider"), can cause serious medical problems, and occasionally even death. When either of these species are found in or immediately adjacent to a home, they need to be exterminated. The health risks are too serious to ignore them.
For most other species, it's pretty much up to the customer. Some people don't mind spiders around their homes or in unoccupied areas like attics, crawl spaces, and unfinished basements. Other people are deathly afraid of spiders and want them gone. Most people are somewhere in the middle: They want the spiders anywhere inside their homes and in the areas immediately outside their homes treated.
When we treat your home for insects, we treat for spiders, too, unless you tell us otherwise. So please let us know if you want us to leave the spiders be.
